The provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 stipulate that unless otherwise specified, the electrical installation of the fixed property may not be marketed or sold unless the safety requirements have been complied with. In other words, the Certificate of Compliance (C.O.C.) must be a valid document in the sale process.

HOW DOES THE APPROVED ELECTRICAL INSPECTION AUTHORITY FUNCTION?
Approved Inspection Authorities may be used for inspection to determin compliance of new electrical installation work performed by electrical contractors, an existing electrical installation or to determine the validity of an Electrical Certificates of Compliance (COC) issued during change of ownership of properties containing electrical installations.

No person shall sell or market an electrical installation which is subject to a safety standard unless the electrical installation complies with that standard.

Only an Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) accredited by the Department of Labour should be used to verify any electrical installation work or a Certificate of Compliance. The use of any other person or organizations may prejudice your rights of recourse.
As a seller, Ensure that the electrician whom you appoint is a Registered Person authorized to issue a C.O.C. – We can do this on your behalf.
